Egg Donation Process

Discover the fascinating facts behind our egg donation process

One of the most gratifying experiences that young women can undergo is that of becoming an egg donor. In order to accept our invitation to become an egg donor at Ovation, it is necessary to first complete our questionnaire and undergoing routine medical, genetic and psychological screening. Once these tests have been completed and found to be normal, then you can officially begin the egg donation process. We love caring for egg donors and applaud them for meeting our high standards.

There are two types of donor cycles

  • Fresh egg donor cycles, which are coordinated with a female egg recipient.
  • Frozen egg donor cycles, which allow donors to begin their cycle at any time because their eggs are immediately frozen after retrieval and stored. There is, therefore, no need to coordinate the donor’s cycle with the female recipient’s cycle.

Our physicians, counselors, nurses and patient coordinators will be by your side to explain each step of the egg donation process. Egg donors can expect to undergo similar types of treatment as our in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients.

You are ready to begin the egg donation process

Your body already stores your entire lifetime‘s supply of eggs. Our challenge is to stimulate the ovaries to generate multiple mature eggs in one cycle and to then retrieve them so that they can eventually be fertilized. To do so, we ask donors to commit to the following steps with our Nashville egg donation center.

Keep your body healthy.
You must limit medications to Tylenol or prescriptions that have been approved in advance. Do not smoke or drink alcohol during the donation cycle.

Administer hormone injections to stimulate egg development.
Our fertility specialists will teach you how to administer simple injections that will stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs while simultaneously preventing you from ovulating spontaneously. The stimulation process takes approximately two- to three weeks to complete. During this time, you will receive occasional blood tests and ultrasound examinations at our offices in order to confirm that the medications are working.

Trigger final egg development.
Once your eggs are mature, you will receive one additional hormonal injection. The timing of this treatment is critical, as your eggs will be retrieved approximately 35-36 hours later.

Undergo retrieval.
The egg retrieval is a minimally invasive procedure, performed at our Ovation Fertility Center surgery location. It takes less than 30 minutes, and you will be kept comfortable with light IV sedation during that time. Due to the sedation, you will need to have someone with you who can drive you home after the procedure. During the retrieval, a thin needle will be passed through the top of the vagina directly into each ovarian follicle. Gentle suction removes the eggs from the follicles, and the eggs are then taken into the embryology laboratory for evaluation. Your postoperative recovery is quick, as most women are ready to leave one to two hours after the procedure. You can return to work or school the following day. You may feel a little puffy or bloated for a few days afterward.
